Govt extends inquiry deadline by a week in Shopian killings

The government on Friday extended deadline for completion of probe into civilian killings by army in Shopian by a week.

The government had appointed Deputy Commissioner Shopian as inquiry officer and asked him to complete the probe within 20-days into the killing of three civilians by army men in Ganowpora village of Shopian last month.
“The inquiry officer had sought one more week to complete the probe and it was granted to him,” Divisional Commissioner Baseer Khan said.

Police had registered an FIR against army into the Shopian killings and named the army officer Major Aditya , who was leading the army men when troops fired on civilians in Ganowpora village.
However, the Supreme Court has stayed the FIR after father of the army officer approached the apex court.
