A gunfight broke out between militants and troops during Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at BatmuranWanpora area of Shopian district on Monday evening.
A joint team of 44 RR, 14 BN of CRPF and SOG laid siege around Batmuran, Wanpora area of Shopian in the evening after receiving inputs about presence of militants there, police sources said.
As the forces were laying siege in the area, locals came out of their houses and pelted stones on them.
The clashes became intense and police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.
The army also resorted to aerial firing, according to locals.
They said a local video journalist Aijaz Dar sustained injuries during clashes.
A top police official said the cordon was still intact and searches were being conducted in the area.
He said clashes were also going on when reports last came in.
Sources said intense gunfight broke out between holed up militants and forces during the cordon and search operation.
They said additional troops were rushed to the area to tighten the siege and prevent militants from escaping from the area.
