Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Monday spoke about the hardships and pain he had gone through after the assassination of his father, Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq.
He said lakhs of others like him in Kashmir were deprived of their father’s love due to the ‘atrocities’ carried against the people.
“My story is a story of lakhs of Kashmiris who lost their beloved in this struggle and I can feel their pain,” he said.
Moulvi Farooq, the 14th Mirwaiz of Kashmir, was assassinated on 21st May 1990 at his residence by unknown gunmen.
“It is usually said that wounds get healed with time but my experience is that you always miss the person you lose,” Mirwaiz said on the 28th martyrdom anniversary of his father in a social media live speech. “Every son wants to have his father’s patronage and hand on head and I can feel and understand that pain like lakhs of others who have been deprived of their fathers love.”
He was placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence on the Srinagar outskirts here and was not allowed to march to Eidgah to pay homage to his late father and another senior Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Lone who was killed on the same day in 2002.
Mirwaiz said it was a difficult time for his family.
“Even during the time of partition, our family got divided when Muhajir e-Millat Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Yousuf Shah was forced to migrate,” he said. “Since then half of our family live on the other side of Kashmir and most of our relatives died in the pain of longing to reunite again.”
Recalling that it had been 28 years since he joined the pro-freedom ‘struggle’, the Mirwaiz said, “It’s long time and my story is like a story of lakhs of other Kashmiris who lost their beloved in this struggle.”
The Hurriyat (M) Chairman said he remembers those 65 families as well whose beloved were martyred in Hawal and in numerous other massacres.
Terming the Hawal massacre of 21st May 1990 as Kashmir’s Jallianwala Bagh, he said, “When we talk about the martyrs and Shaheed-e-Millat, lakhs of people have laid their lives for the birth right of right-to self-determination of Kashmiris.
The Mirwaiz said now the fourth generation of Kashmiris was on streets and in this caravan, hundreds and thousands had ‘laid their lives’.
Speaking about his slain father, Mirwaiz said his father made efforts to represent the aspirations of Kashmir.
“For 27 years from 1963 till his martyrdom in 1990, he did his best to represent the sentiments of people and the pulpit of Jamia Masjid is witness to it,” he said.
The Hurriyat (M) Chairman said when there was little talk about Kashmir issue and every leader during that time had buried the Kashmir ‘struggle’, it was Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq who coined, ‘Yeh mulk hamara hai; is ka faisala hum karenge’ (this is our nation and we will decide its fate).
“At the time of Indira-Abdullah accord, when Shimla and Tashkent agreements happened, Shaheed-e-Millat took out a historic rally and said Kashmir issue is not bilateral but a tripartite issue,” he said.
The Mirwaiz said the killing of his father had created a political vacuum in Kashmir that lost its sincere leader.
“His killing was also a personal test for our family,” he said.
Calling for shouldering more responsibilities to take the sacrifices offered by the people who laid their lives for the ‘Kashmir cause’, the Hurriyat (M) Chairman said there was a need for exhibiting unity as a ‘small nation of Kashmir continues its fight against a big power’.
“The courage of people gives courage to the leadership and keeps us going,” he said.
The Mirwaiz reiterated that the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) was trying to keep every section of society in loop and make resistance their lifestyle.
“We will form a joint strategy and adopt it in our everyday life as restrictions and killings are not new to us,” he said. “Every colonial power has this approach and pushes the people to the wall.”
However, the Hurriyat (M) Chairman said Kashmiris had proven it that despite brutality, they remember the sacrifices of their youth who left everything behind for the ‘freedom of this nation’ and continue to carry on with the fight against the military might.
Saluting the will and determination shown by the Kashmir people, he said the day was not far when the movement will reach its logical conclusion.
“JRL represents the aspirations of people and we have to move forward with clarity and without any ambiguity,” the Mirwaiz said.
He said those who talk of bridges, development and jobs should know that this movement was not about perks and packages but about aspirations and rights.
