Indian Army commando killed in Kupwara gunfight

An army commando was killed in gunfight with militants at Kandi forest area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.
Defence sources said army launched search operation in Kandi forest area yesterday after receiving inputs about presence of militants there.
They said in the afternoon today, army men established contact with the militants hiding in Sadu Ganga forest area of Kandi.
“The militants fired on the army men and the fire was returned by the troops. In the brief gunfight, a para commando identified as MukulMeena sustained critical bullet injuries. He was evacuated to military hospital Drugmulla, where doctors declared him brought dead,” sources said.
They said the militants managed to escape from the area during the gunfight.
Additional troops have been rushed to the area to tighten the siege and encircle the militants.
“The combing operation was going on when reports last poured in,” sources said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, AmbarkarShriramDinkar confirmed the death of the army commando.
