Police have started to investigate whether or not the PhD scholar from Kupwara has joined militant ranks after his picture—holding a gun in left hand surfaced on social media on Sunday.
Manan Bashir Wani, son of Bashir Ahmad Wani of Tekipora Kupwara is not reachable on his phone.
The family has approached Lolab Police in Kupwara with a complaint that they were not able to contact Manan as his phone was switched off.
“We have received a complaint from his family stating that Manan’s phone was switched off from past nearly three days and they were not able to contact him,” said a police officer posted in Kupwara.
He said that initial reports suggested that Manan has recently travelled from Aligarh to Delhi.
Manan has M phil degree in applied geology and is a PhD scholar at Aligarh Muslim University’s Geology department.
On social media, his photograph with a description stated his date of becoming active with Hizbul Mujahideen on 05 Jan, code-named as Hamzah Bai.
As per the information on AMU website Manan was awarded the ‘Best Paper Presentation Award’ in an International Conference on ‘Water, Environment, Energy and Society’ (ICWEES) held at AISECT University, Bhopal, in 2016.
He was awarded for his paper ‘Flood Risk Assessment of Lolab Valley from Watershed Analysis Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques’. Manan has been working under the supervision of Professor Syed Ahmad Ali in AMU.
A police officer said that they are acting on a family complaint and social media reports.
“Yet we can say nothing about it. It may take some days to ascertain the truth,” said the officer and added, “Manan’s call details will be checked.”
Sources said police also tried to contact some persons in AMU but were not able to get through. “Nothing is clear yet about this case. But, we are looking into it,” said a source.
