Police sounds high alert Fears woman suicide bomber may target Jan 26function

Police Wednesday sounded high alert in Kashmir following an intelligence input that a non-Kashmiri woman might cause a suicide bombing in or inside the January 26 parade in Valley.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir), in a message, has informed all district police heads and SSP security that there is a strong input that an 18-year-old woman, Sadiya Anwar Shaikh, a resident of Yerwada Pune, Maharashtra may cause suicide bomb explosion near or inside the Republic parade venue in Valley.
The police officials were told that the woman is presently in Valley.

“All are directed to please ensure that frisking of ladies at the venues is done meticulously and with utmost caution so as to thwart the designs of anti-national elements,” reads the message marked as most urgent and issued on January 23.

ADGP Munir Ahmad Khan told Rising Kashmir that such inputs keep coming on occasions like January 26 or August 15.
“Inputs keep coming and we can’t brush it out. We verify these inputs,” he said.
Khan said tight security has been put in place at Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium in Srinagar, where main R-Day function would be held.
“There will be a multiple layer security for Jan 26 function in Srinagar and forces have been deployed in strength at all strategic locations in the city to prevent militants from moving around and launching attack,” he said.
The forces are conducting random frisking and searches of vehicles entering the city.
This year the main January 26 function would be held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium instead of Bakshi Stadium, which is undergoing renovation work.
The area around the cricket stadium was sealed this morning for full dress rehearsal of the parade.
Traffic police have issued an advisory for movement of vehicles between the city centre and south Kashmir.
