UN urged to hold India accountable for war crimes in kashmir

While welcoming the remarks by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, the Convener of AJK chapter of Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat forum, Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, and Vice Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir National Front, (JKNF) Altaf Hussain Wani, have said that the High Commissioner’s remarks highlight the gravity of human rights situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Syed Faiz Naqshbandi in a statement issued in Islamabad, today, called upon the United Nations to investigate rights violations in the occupied territory. He pointed out that India was pursuing genocide in IIOJK and had become a threat to regional peace and security, and asked the UN Secretary General to take notice of the horrifying human right violations in IIOJK.

Altaf Hussain Wani in a statement issued in Islamabad said, Michelle Bachelet’s remarks vindicate our stance on the dire human rights situation in IIOJK and the measures taken by India are in violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. He, however, maintained that it was high time that the UN High Commission should move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to hold the Indian government accountable for war crimes being committed by its troops in IIOJK.

Referring to the continued bloodshed, violence, and use of brute force against civilians by Indian forces in the occupied territory, he said that the global community needs to realise the fact that the Kashmiris who were being killed, maimed, and murdered day in and day out by the occupation forces could not be left at the mercy of the Indian government, which was hell-bent on erasing the Kashmiris’ political and cultural identity.

“Kashmir valley has virtually been shut for more than a year now, the local economy has suffered a loss of billions of dollars, the education suffered enormously due to the continued lockdown impose by the Indian authorities whereas thousands of youth and the high profile pro-freedom leaders booked under infamous Public Safety Act have been left to rot in jails,” Wani said adding that there was no space whatsoever for political dissent in the territory.

Terming it a serious violation of basic human rights, Wani urged the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to appoint a special envoy on Kashmir to uphold the rights of the Kashmiri people.

Meanwhile, the President of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM), Altaf Ahmed Butt, in a statement in Islamabad also lauded UN High Commissioner’s statement regarding ongoing human rights violations by Indian troops in IIOJK. He added that Indian propaganda, lies and fake news regarding normalcy in the occupied territory were exposed before the world now. He said that Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Ajit Doval introduced illegal Domicile law during COVID-19 outbreak to change the demography of the territory and within 3 months thousands of domiciles had been issued to the Indian citizens.

He said that world powers must stop Modi from jeopardizing the peace and stability of the region.
