A youth was killed and several others injured during clashes in different parts of Shopian district after an encounter broke out between militants and forces in Turkawangam, Zainapora area of Shopian district on Wednesday.
Police sources said acting on inputs about presence of some militants, forces laid siege near Government Higher Secondary Turkawangam in Zainapora in Shopian.

“As the forces advanced towards the house where militants were hiding, they came under volume of fire. The militants managed to escape from the area during the initial gunfight,” they said.
Sources said there was no exchange of fire since evening and only force personnel were firing intermittent shots towards the house, where they suspected militants to be hiding.

As the news about trapping of militants in the area spread, hundreds of locals took to roads at Moolu Chitragam and near the encounter site in Zainapora. They pelted stones on the deployments to pave way for militants to break the cordon.
The force personnel fired pellet, bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the protestors.
Many protestors sustained injuries in the forces action and they were evacuated to Sub District Hospital Shopian, where one of the critically injured youth identified as Umar Kumar succumbed toinjuries.
“We received body of a young boy from Pinjura area of Shopian who had a bullet wound on the left side of his chest. He was dead on arrival and the public instantly took his body away. We also received three youth with pellet injuries. Their condition is stable,” said a medico at SDH Shopian.
A youth with a bullet injury in chest wound was taken to District Hospital Pulwama where from he was referred to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment.
The injured youth has been identified as Inayat Ahmed Malla.
The intense clashes at the encounter site spread to other adjacent areas, causing injuries to many people.
“Around 20 injured were brought to Sub district hospital Zainapora out of which four were referred to Srinagar hospitals. Three had bullet injuries while 17 others had pellet injuries”, said a medico at PHC Zainapora.
Two youth with bullet wounds were brought to district hospital Anantnag.
They had sustained injuries during clashes near the gunfight site.
“We received two youth with bullet injuries in their thighs and their condition was stable as they were treated here,” said Medical Superintendent DH Anantnag.
Intense clashes were going on near the encounter site when reports last poured in.
