Friday prayers disallowed in Hyderpora Jamia Masjid for third straight week

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has disallowed congregational Friday prayers at the Hyederpora Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, for the third consecutive week.

The authorities in Kashmir have barred people to offer prayers at the mosque following the death of senior Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The resistance leader passed away on 1 September after prolonged illness at his residence.

Following his death, the government put in strict restrictions and imposed a communication blackout for days.

He was buried in the dead of the night on 2 September, with only neighbours and relatives allowed to participate in the funeral.

The move was criticised and the Jammu and Kashmir police posted videos of his burial on their Twitter handle.
