Kashmir struggles for vaccines; Srinagar records 0 doses for 5 consecutive days

Srinagar, the worst COVID19 hit district of Jammu and Kashmir with 8425 active positive cases and the second highest death toll, has recorded zero vaccinations for the last five days as Jammu division recorded thousands of daily vaccines. 

The summer capital has recorded zero vaccines on 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 May, while the vaccine data was not released by the government yesterday (17 May).

In the same time frame, Jammu district recorded 206 vaccines on 12 May, zero on 13 May, 6089 on 14 May, 5532 on 15 May, 3093 on 16 May.

Jammu division’s ten districts recorded 9906 doses on 12 May, 4509 on 13 May, 14713 on 14 May, 14238 on 15 May and 8750 on 16 May.

In comparison, Kashmir’s ten districts recorded 840 doses on 12 May, zero on 13 May, 199 on 14 May, 504 on 15 May and zero on 16 May.

In the past nine days, Kashmir valley had accounted for less than 14 percent of vaccines that were administered in Jammu and Kashmir as Jammu division accounted for the bulk of it. Since 8 May, Kashmir valley’s ten districts had administered 18384 doses of vaccination while 132292 doses were administered in the Jammu division.

Out of these 1.3 lac vaccines administered in Jammu division, 41907 vaccines have been administered among the people of Jammu district.

The disparity in the administration of vaccine doses has taken place even as Srinagar remains the worst affected district and has recorded nearly 60000 cases of COVID-19 virus till date and has nearly 8425 active positive cases – the highest in Jammu and Kashmir.

Srinagar also accounts for the second-highest deaths in Jammu and Kashmir with a toll of nearly 700 deaths.

The total number of positive cases in Kashmir as of 16 May was 149913 with 31189 active positive cases. Jammu has recorded comparatively lesser numbers at 94695 cases till 17 May with 20434 active positive cases.

The death toll in Kashmir reached 1710 till 17 May while it reached 1439 in Jammu.
